Bumps, Dropshadows and All That | From Photoshop to After Effects
Posted by Douglass Turner on October 2, 2006 at 2:34 pmHello,
This should be a rather simple one for y’all. I would like to create animated versions of some multi-layer work I’ve done in Photoshop. The all follow simple architecture:Top Layer
Solid colored rectangle with Linear Burn blend mode.Middle Layer
Solid white rectangle with attached matte. I apply these effects: drop shadow + bevel/emboss.Bottom Layer
Solid white rectangle with attached matte. Here is what the comp looks like:
https://www.daturner.com/creativecow/thread.pngHow closely can I recreate the effects in After Effects. Can I somehow import the Photoshop effects into AE. Are there equivalent effects in AE that will faithfully reproduce the Photoshop effect?
Any and all help is much appreciated.
Regards,
Doug Turner

October 2, 2006 at 2:45 pmAdobe has dropped the ability to use PS effects in AE, sadly.
But I’d use perspective>drop shadow, and perspective>bevel on a layer consisting of the curved lines, maybe over a white solid for the background. Then you could place an orange solid over it all and cycle through its transfer modes (shift+ or shift-) until you get what you like.
That’s one way, anyway.

October 2, 2006 at 2:56 pmAnyone know why Adobe haven’t sorted out PS/AE effects & filters compatibility yet?
It seems to me like one of the main things that needs addressing, especially if they’re all about ‘integrating’ all their apps. The omission of many of the PS layer styles in AE is a real workflow pain for me and probably many others.
I don’t suppose anybody would like to hazard a guess at when the next AE/PS updates might be? (I know, no one says until it’s officially announced. But ‘hunch-wise’ any thoughts? I’m just about to buy Production Studio Premium after trying out all the trials, but I just know as soon as I do that they’ll bring out new versions! Is there a grace period for people who buy right on the cusp of an update?
And does anyone know definitively if when you own the Prod Studio package, if you can individually update the apps within it?
Thanks.

Because they are developed by different teams. It’s as simple as that. Since AE is usually “behind”, they have little or no influence on the PS people and have to muddle their way thru whatever novelties the latest PS has. I agree, it’s a major pain, but it doesn’t really look like it’s going to be resolved soon.

Nobody knows, but some simple logic might help: The latest video collection was released early this year (February/ March) and there’s usually a 2 year cycle with Adobe products. So, if you buy now and assuming there is a grace period (which to my knowledge is rare with Adobe and at best 2 months), you can be sure your purchase won’t fall into that category. ;o)

October 2, 2006 at 3:33 pmAppreciated…very annoying though! It’s a major annoyance designing all your GFX layouts and text styles in PS, only to have to either flatten them all before import (rendering the infinitely scalable text layer option useless and making editing/animating the styles impossible) or stripping away all the layer styles and trying to rebuild them to match in AE.
By no means ideal! Hey ho.It just means that when I’m doing a low budget job my client usually can’t be @rsed waiting for me to rebuild it all in AE again so it can be animated and so many GFX end up as stills, or crudely animated in the Editbox later on. This make-a me sad 🙁 Ha ha!
If it’s 2yr cycles or so between versions, then looks like I might aswell buy now and worry later!

October 2, 2006 at 3:38 pmHmmm. I just sort of assumed AE was the way to go here. Is there some other software I should be using that can directly import my Photoshop coolness.
What is the path of least pain here?
Cheers,

October 2, 2006 at 3:54 pmEXACTLY! You’d think they’d go hand in hand…
Being able to re-edit PS text layers in v7 (and 6.5?) is a great addition, but not unless it’s totally plain text with nothing applied to it!

Sorry, no app other than PS itself can give you all its layer effects. Ever since CS 1 the format has changed drastically without all changes being revealed to third parties, so nobody can really re-create all functionalities. At best you can get yourself additional plugins to re-create all effects inside AE or use another software entirely and leave PS out of the loop.

October 2, 2006 at 4:29 pmA little OT…Is there a special way to flatten your layer styles in PS into a vector-based layer? That could help a bit, by keeping the layer infinitely sizable, although, still not re-editble.
You’re going to tell me to make my layouts up in Illustrator now arentcha! Just not an option when I have so much pixel-based work to do alongside the text and shape creation.
I crave a one-stop shop!

October 3, 2006 at 9:29 amHi Dave,
I’m not talking about infinitely scaling a raster file – I’m on about vector text files, that have vector-based layer styles. A PS text file is infinitely scalable in AE, but if you want to keep the layer styles intact, it needs to be rasterized currently. That’s what I’m asking and what will also, probably take ages to come to fruition!
