I have a G5 1.6 PowerBook 1.25 and thinking about getting a mac mini. If I network these 3 cpu would these cpu’s increase FCP’s performance?

No. What kind of performance issues are you having?

it will in fcp 5 they say. But the fastest one they make still is not fast enough, so I don’t know if a mini will do much good. Just my thought

What on earth are you guys talking about? Network rendering for FCP? FCP 5 won’t do that, but Compressor will do distributed encoding. Is that what you mean?

Heh, even if it did network render that doesn’t really have to do with performance… That’s why I asked what his performance issues were. I don’t know about you guys, but network rendering isn’t something that I would even really use in my workflow. FCP is rendering what I give it so fast these days I can barely get in the occasional cigarette!

I just wanted to speed up my rendering time and add more real time playback options.

A network setup won’t buy you much in those regards. If you want more RT, then buy the fastest Mac you can afford. You want better performance? Stuff it full of RAM and buy the fastest drives you can get. An Xserve RAID is pretty awesome.

A networked setup with Xsan or the like buys you media sharing capabilities and distributed encoding for Compressor. You can do distributed rendering with Shake, too.

You don’t need Xsan for the distributed encoding for compressor or rendering for Shake. Gigabit ethernet will do–but you won’t get reliable media share capabilities.
