  Hi,
  I’m looking to purchase the new G5 to capture and master back and forth from a DVCam deck via Firewire to the G5…the only thing I’m worried about is that I also need to have playback to my Sony monitor for the client.

  Someone told me that I don’t need a card (like an AJA or Decklink) to do this. They say I can play from the Final Cut timeline to the monitor with no delay. Is this true? I thought that this was not possible.

  I would hate to get my new system and then have to go out and buy a card afterwards.

  Also, how is this done?

  Connect the deck to the monitor (Audio and Video).
  FCP sends out its image and audio via FireWire and the deck converts it to analog for monitoring.

  FCP is designed to monitor quality via this method.
  There is a small delay (a few frames compared to the computer screen Canvas) when in this mode, but the FW audio and video remain in perfect sync. (You can even set a delay on the Mac screen to match the external feed perfectly.) I think I read that the new FCP 5 eliminates this delay anyway.

  If you want MAXIMUM “realtime” effects (to increase your decision-making workflow speed), you can switch OFF the external FW feed and work only from the screen and audio output from the Mac (and lose the external monitor entirely during this mode of work.)
  But I seldom do this.
  I constantly use the external monitor (via FW) during my editing (and render frequently) so I can check the full-quality of my images.
