  • Poor Quality Footage in Final Cut Pro 4.5 from After Effects

Posted by Michael on April 20, 2005 at 9:04 pm

I have a 5 second clip which I created in After Effects 6.5 containing three panels of video with some color overlays applied to each. The Render from After Effects looks fine. When I bring the Quicktime into Final Cut and play it in the viewer, it appears fine. A great deal of pixelation occurs when I place it in the timeline and play it in the canvas; a best quality no compression quicktime made from Final Cut also appears very low quality.

Any suggestions or points in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Michael

    #2 Playback is blurry

DV footage requires large amounts of data and many computations. In order to maintain frame rate and be viewable at a normal size, only about one-fourth of the DV data is used in displaying the movie to the screen. However, the DV footage is still at full quality, and is best viewed thru a TV or NTSC monitor routed thru your camera or deck.

Thanks for the response. I’ll try playback again through my deck. The weird thing is that the swatooth edges or pixelation occur only on clips I have brought in from After Effects with color effects. All my other DV footage plays fine right in the canvas.

I’m wondering if there is some issue between the two applications that of which I am unaware.

    Thanks again

There are no issues in working with the two applications but you must conform your AE renders to your project’s format. You could be seeing improperly set field order out of AE. Render a test of a shorter clip that contains some side-side motion and reverse the field dominance.

What codec are you using to render out of AE?

If the AE clip plays properly in QT at full rez, you’ve likely got a problem with your rendering settings inside FCP.

Keep trying, post back with results, and be sure to read the section of the manual that explains inter-application round trips.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
