I am working on a giant project that requires about 20tb worth of drive space. Everything is ProRes HQ 1920×1080. A tiny fraction of the footage is 4k. The budget just isn’t there for a bunch of thunderbolt drives.

What is your experience with using Media 100 to edit from USB 3.0 drives? I’ve always used either firewire or thunderbolt.

    Thanks.

I have no USB 3.0 capability but i am curious if eSata is an option for you?

Yeah, that is possibly an option as well.

I use OWC external drives with a USB 3 card in my MacPro 2008. Works great! Make sure you get a current PCIe card i.e. INATEK. I previously had a Sonnet Card that only worked part time. No problems now.

Yes, using the Inatek cards as well. Works fine, at least for HD data rates. If you want to edit 4k files, you should look at your data rate for the codec you want to use to see if this is possible with USB3. Maybe you need some striped drives or a RAID to achieve the necessary data rates.
