    Hi there,

I saw this commercial and I was wondering how they did the tatoos that grows on the skin of the people.
My guess is that they modeled a 3D object matching the live actor, and then had the 3D objects texture
being the tatoos. And then composited it afterwards.

Am I right or is done in a different way?

I ask because I’m going to do the same thing just with buildings and graffiti.

Have any of you tried this by the way?

Here is an earlier post where Chris Smith shares some magic for tracking dot removal on a tatoo job:

I once read an FX article where they put an animated snake tattoo on a guys arm in a movie and they did exactly the way you describe where they match modeled geometry, rendered out the textures then comped them. However, sticking to the old saying “Never express what you can imply”, I would at least take a still photo and lay some 2d art over it and see if you can use simple displacement maps and such to fake it without matching the exact geometry of the person it’s on. If you feel it can be accomplished, then all need to do is do a standard 2D motion track on the person and comp it over. If it just isn’t looking right , then maybe the way they did it in the movie with matching geometry is the most high quality way. But I’d try my damndest to get 2D working first.

Well, kind of complicated to explain detailed and any comp would be different, but I’d do this:

Animate the tatoo comp growing, this tutorial is great https://forums.creativecow.net/cgi-bin/page_wrapper.cgi?forumid=2&page=https://www.creativecow.net/articles/hansen_jaysen/growing/index.html

Track the part of the body where the tatto is going to be.

    Apply displacemant map.

Set the transfer mode to Overlay to keep the sink’s texture and bright.

A few corrections and it’s done.

    Hard work, but not impossible.
