    Hello all,
It’s time for a new computer, as my rendering times are slow. Before I do so, I need to understand what tasks a few major components do. I will be guided by whatever you guys say is best. My questions are . .
    RAM
Is this a ” storage area ” ? Get as much as I can ?
    CPU
Does the processor do the actual RENDERING ?
    GRAPHICS CARD
Is this also doing rendering, or something else ?

    MAJOR QUESTION
Should more money go into the Graphics Card or the Processor ?? ( if I can’t spend a heap on both )

Thanks for helping me understand what each thing really does.
    And thanks for reading.

    Hi!

In studio I have Computers with configurations:
4 GM RAM DDR – max
Matrox Parhelia 128 MB (I do not advice these cards)
    Processor: Pentium IV 2.6 Ghz
    3 HD. C: system D: Projects E: Scratch Disc

There will be better as you will buy good processor.
Hand memory is for viewing in real time.
    But rendering requires rocessor.

Example. We made rendering fog with FRACTAL NOISE. Project enough complicated. Duration 4 second. It lasted at I 16 minute Redering.

Search for professional card best video, which be help encoding equipment.

    Ram 2gig or more

Since you are concerned about money I don’t think you are interested in Dual Dualcore processors
CPU Conroe duo 2 6600 or up depending on your bucks, its your workhorse for rendering

Graphics Card, you need Open GL 2 for preview rendering, You can get various flavors of Nvidia 7600-7800 cards in the $150-$250 range that will suffice for most needs.

Couple of things to think about. Ram, currently WinXP 32bit can only address 4gb if mem, (only 2gb will be available to apps, 3gb if you tweak with some switches). That being said, 64bit OS’s are picking up popularity XP64 and soon to be Vista will be able to address a large amount of memory and be able to run 32bit apps (such as AE) in their own memory space with a whole 4gb chunk (if there is enough).
Intel’s processors can be 32bit or 64bit capable, you’ll need to find some specs on the processor to find out if it supports 64bit(EM64T). Rendering is a bunch of number crunching so a nice fast CPU will help quite a bit.
AE7 can now use some of the horsepower of the Graphics Processor Unit (GPU) on the graphics card and OpenGL to speed up effects and renders. You might check Abobe’s list of supported graphics cards before buying one:
