Curling Text around 3D tubing
So I have begun to see this a lot, and it’s something that has been eluding me for a while…I need to create text to move on a 3D curved path so that it will rotate with and around 3D circular objects. How do I make the text bend to the shape of the 3D curves? I’m good on the rotation with anchor points, etc…but I just can’t figure out the curling part. Please, someone, relieve my headache!!!! Thanks!

Not sure I understand your problem entirely, but if I may assume that you have an object layer with something on it (say a picture of a beachball) and you want the text to go around it.
Create a text layer and apply CCSphere to it. Blow up the radius so it’s bigger than the ball. You can then rotate the sphere to move the text in a circular fashion. To make it appear infront and behind the ball, duplicate the text layer and then on each CCSphere you can make it render the outside and inside of the sphere. So the outside one sits above the beachball, the inside on behind. Now if you rotate the two CCspheres in unison, it looks like the text goes around the beachball.

You might want to check out a “ribbon” tutorial on the COW by David Langley, or a Zaxwerks “filmstrip” tutorial by Serge Hamad.
However, both those methods are limited, since AE’s 3D capabilities are limited. If you want more flexibility, use a real 3D app … which was probably used for the spots you’ve seen. 🙂

Alex’s is the easiest and best for text around a beachball or globe, but if you have many objects in AE 3D you might look at this answer just below:
