I have a friend who’s in a nightmare scenario right now, and I’m hoping to help them out.

One editor left a project after a first edit and passed it along to the next editor to pick up. Apparently he didn’t make proxies for the 4K footage he was working with, so the next editor can barely play let alone work with the footage on her system. Rendering all of the footage will also use up almost all of the time they have left to edit.

My first instinct is that perhaps there’s a way to render the clips plus handles of the sequence left by the first editor. Perhaps utilizing the “Render and Replace” option and converting the clips to a quicktime Prores 422 LT format? Then just render and replace as they go? That’s not what the function is intended for, so I’m not sure if that’s just asking for further problems.

Anything you guys can suggest to help would be appreciated–thank you!

I’d create proxies of all of the 4k media in Resolve.

Don’t use Render and Replace for this. Not its purpose.

Select the clips you want to create proxies for in the project panel. Right Click and Select Proxy/Create Proxies. Important: Select a preset that matches the aspect ratio of the original footage. Media Encoder opens and creates your proxies. They become attached when the encode finishes/

Make sure the button “Toggle Proxies” is included under your is included under your Program Monitor. If not, add it by clicking the plus sign and add it from the window that appears.

Toggle the Proxies on and you are playing the proxies instead of the original 4k files.
