How does Premiere treat clips ‘below’ others on the timeline during export?
Hello everyone,
Exporting out a 35 minute 4K timeline and I’ve got multiple angles I’ve been cutting between. I’m curious how Premiere treats the clips underneath the main timeline. I assume they’re ignored completely but, would render times go down if I was to disable all the clips I didn’t use? Would this have any bearing on file size?

Hi Charles,
This should have no affect on filesize, however I remember reading somewhere that it does affect render time and that these clips are still considered during the render despite being obscured. I’m not 100% whether this is still the case, but I got into the habit of disabling any clips that I’d covered with B-roll or B-CAM. Not just changing visibility for the layer either, but disabling on a per clip basis (Cmd+Shift+E).
I’d be curious to hear back from you if you get time to do a couple of renders to compare.

I figured the same thing and remember way back in my FCP7 days this was common practice. I have ‘another’ large 4k project that will be about the same length with the same codec I’m starting today, when I render it out I’ll test this theory and we shall see! Thanks for the insight sir!

I’ve never heard such a thing. If a clip on a lower track is completely 100% obscured, no transparency from clips above, those hidden clips should have absolutely no bearing on render time and it seems a waste of time to have to go in and hide the hidden clips. I’ve worked on multi-cam, multi-layer long-form edits for many years and exports have always been fast.

I had to cut up a few shorter timelines yesterday and decided to do half with hidden clips enabled and half with them disabled and Export was indeed faster. On average I went from about 3:30 render times down to about a minute. So in my experience, yes, it makes a difference to disable unused clips on the timeline.
It’s an option if you’re stuck working on a very long timeline and having trouble rendering, can’t hurt to try it.

Or make a copy of your sequence and, in the copy, move all the active clips onto the bottom track. Start with the topmost track and move all of those down one, then grab all of that track and move down to the bottom. Then the system won’t even have to think about the ones you’re not using.

I agree with Jeff. I will leave AE linked comps on my timeline and put the fully rendered out of AE version over the top and it renders just fine. Does not take into consideration the AE comp on the lower layer which if I rendered in PPro would take forever.
