  Report on Premiere performance on new i7-7820x build

  Hi folks just thought I’d let others know how my new system goes.

  I just build a new X299 system with following specs;

  i7-7820x
  GTX 1080ti gfx
  64GB RAM
  1TB SSD SATA (OS and Programs)
  1TB NVMe (Premiere Projects and source media)
  240GB SSD SATA (scratch, previews)

  Really happy with the system editing 4k from my GH5 and Phantom Pro 4 drone.

  Scrub through footage at full res easily with GH5 UHD/60p (150mbit?) footage. Its a slight lag scrubbing the drone footage – i think its a heavily compressed (long gop?) codec.. but still very usuable and plays fine in preview windows – just scrubbing is a slight lag sometimes. I haven’t tried halving the preview window resolution or anything so it can’t be too bad. Seems the same when i have lumetri, warp stabilizer, transitions etc applied on clips – no lag on GH5 footage and just that tiny bit scrubbing the drone.

  Outputting 4k/60p to intra codec of same rez (i can’t remember that long name with lots of X and N and D’s etc ) takes about double the time of the sequence time. Eg a 30sec sequence will take a minute. Outputting it to 1080p takes about half the time (15sec for 30sec of footage).

  A very nice upgrade from my i7-4770/16GB RAM/GTX960.

  Perhaps the new AMD threadripper would’ve been better but I thought I’d stick with intel this time.

  Hello, Paul, just read your post about your new 4K editing machine.

  I just built mine with similar specs:

  Core i7 7820X
  Motherboard ARock X299 Taichi
  64GB Ram (Crucial DDR4 2666)
  GTX 1080 TI Asus Strix OC
  1TB Crucial M2 NVme
  500GB WD Black M2 NVme

  This setup is very fast (I’m coming from a late 2013 core i7 MacBook Pro with GTX 750M), but it’s been a pain to keep it stable. Did you have any problems with crashes, BSODs, etc? I’m having to setup my processor to 3.6GHZ and disable any turbo configuration to use Premiere Pro CC 2018 without any problems.

  What motherboard are you using? Did you make any changes to its default configuration?
