  Best video format for conservation for the future?

  Hello!
  I hope you guys can help me with this case.

  We have a large video file archive, with video in different formats (.mov, .avi, .dv, .mxf). We will now transcode these videos to a common, very good format for conservation for the future. It is important that the quality of the files is the best possible, with the least possible data loss. It is also important to keep the audio in perfect sync with the video. Our goal is to trancode all the videos to a common file format, to get an effective storage with best possible quality.

  Do you have some tips on which file format to choose? Thank you for advice!

  You’ll want no compression or lossless compression, of course. Some of the decision depends on the original material, of course.

  I’m in the PC world, and my “go-to” is usually one of the DNxHD codecs. If you have a flavor preference like MOV, you could do animation (uncompressed) or PNG (lossless compression).

  No matter what you choose, files will be much larger.

  System:
  Dell Precision T7600 (x2)
  Win 7 64-bit
  32GB RAM
  Adobe CC 2015.02 (as of 6/2016)
  256GB SSD system drive
  4 internal media drives RAID 5
  Typically cutting short form from HD MP4 and P2 MXF.

  ProRes (as high as possible) if you can.
  That’s what I use with my RED library.
  The keepers stay in RED format since they are generally smaller than a ProRes 4444 4K file.
  But for anything that goes into production, I stay with ProRes.
