Set resolution in sequence vs set resolution in render?
Hey there creative cows,
I’m working on a project which contains Full HD 29,97fps AND HD 59,97fps footage (for slowmotion)
The end product is to be rendered at 720p 29,97fps. I am wondering if it would be best to set my sequence settings at 720 and downscale all the Full HD material OR if i should just create a Full HD sequence from clip, upscale all the 720 footage and then export it to 720p 29,97.
it’s a very simple question but i couldn’t find an answer anywhere.
Does it matter for the end product in terms of quality?

When reading between the lines, seems like your “HD 59.94” footage is 720p then? In that case, since you are also wanting to export as 720p, the sequence should be 720p. Reason being that if you put 720p in a 1080p sequence, that 720p footage is upscaled to 1080p and loses some quality/sharpness. So then when you later take it back down to 720p during export, it no longer looks as good as it started out due to up and down-size conversions.
Create a 720p30 (29.97) sequence and edit in that. For the 1080p clips, right-click them in timeline and choose SET TO FRAME. This will make those clips fit correctly in the 720p frame, yet allows for some cropping if needed without quality loss (uses original 1920×1080 pixels when applying Motion effects of Scale and Position).
If you apply 50% speed to the 720p59.94 clips, you will have perfect slow motion with no repeat frames. I’m editing a wedding right now, source is 1080p60 and editing in a 1080p30 sequence and loving the slow-motion!!
Of course, export for your project should then be 720p30 (29.97), same as Sequence, and all is well
