iMac specs to cut GH4’s 4K in Premiere?
Hi guys,
Anyone editing GH4’s 4K footage natively with Premiere Pro CC (2015) on a iMac?
I’m investing in a new 27” iMac soon and as much as I would like to just max out all the specs, choices will have to be made.
My question is – from the following – what is the most crucial upgrade(s)?
Processor: i5 (3.2GHz) – vs – i7 (4.0GHz)
RAM: 16 GB – vs – 32 GB
Storage: 1 TB Fusion Drive – vs – 256 GB SSD drive
Graphics (no upgrade option): AMD Radeon R9 M390 (2 GB)Cheers,

It won’t be smooth. Editing native H.264 takes tons of system resources to decode…add in the 4K, and that’s too much for an iMac. You need a machine with not only fast processors, but maybe a couple of them. And a high end graphics card to enable CUDA. You MIGHT be able to get away with it at 1/4 resolution…maybe. A friend of mine tried and ended up transcoding. And now he’s looking at PC options….ones in the $8000 range.
If you are looking at the iMac, you need to max out the processor and RAM on it, if you want any sort of native cutting in Premiere. But even then, you can’t cut every format smoothly. Just a word of warning.

In my experience even when using a mid-range nMP it will choke when it hits H.264 4K. Transcoding is your best bet.

Thanks Shane. I’m definitely considering PC options, even with all the obstacles it will add to our Mac workflow.

Already transcoding to work on a beefy mid-2015 Macbook Pro. I guess I’ll have to keep doing it if I go for the iMac.
