3d lighting in 16bpc
Posted by Ben Trahair on August 6, 2006 at 7:51 amoook this is probably one of those really obvious questions but its got me tearing out my hair – I’m working in AE 6.5 pro on a pc for an animation sequence going on air requiring 16bpc depth and 3d lights are not working. If they are switched off my scene is visible. If they are on the scene is black.Their intensity slider has no control. I’ve tried all the different lights in after effects and none of them create any visble impact on the scene.
I tried switching off open GL and even rendering off a scene in a lossless RGB format and same thing – Black!Suggestions?
Thanks
Ben

August 6, 2006 at 8:29 amCheck that any layers you want to be effected by the light are each set to be 3D layers and that the ‘accept lights’ checkbox (under material options) is checked, by default layers in AE are 2D and are not effected by lights. If it’s still not working, your lights may not be pointed at your layers. Create a new light and change it’s type from ‘spot’ to ‘ambient’. Ambient lights have no direction – similar to a Uwe Boll film.
Hope this helps.

August 6, 2006 at 8:49 amthanks for your reply Steve.
I’ve checked the material options to ensure accept lights is checked, 3d layer settings and lighting position, intensity and different light types and everything is right. If I view the same composition and switch to 8bpc mode everything is visible.
If I open a new project in 16bpc, create a new comp with a 3d solid and add a light the solid is no longer visible. If I switch back to 8bpc its visible – so Im guessing its some kind of a setting somewhere.Any other ideas??

August 6, 2006 at 12:31 pmAre you in Adaptive resoltion and not open GL preview mode? Open GL only works with 8 bit…

August 8, 2006 at 8:12 amThanks for the input guys,
Looks like its a software/hardware issue. The Problem is not evident on another machine.
Cheers

August 8, 2011 at 3:07 pmi’m having the same problem. It has been working fine, but will not work now in 16 bit or 8 bit. Lights just don’t work now. I have confirmed every setting and no matter what I do lights just turn the comp black. If I make the layer not 3D then I can see it. If I turn the light off while the layer is 3D I can see it. I have done hundreds of comps with 3D, but can’t seem to get past this problem that just started this morning. I have turned open GL on and off, I have started new project and tried to build a comp in that. Same results.
Any help would be appreciated.
