Which Apple Computer? iMac?
Hello! I’m switching from FCP7 to Premiere CS6. I bought the CS6 software; no cloud for now. Having browsed several months worth of posts here, it seems there’s a decent circle of people working on 27″ iMacs. I cut documentaries, multi-camera concerts and promos.This is what I am contemplating:
iMac 27″ LED Display 2560×1440 resolution (NOT Retina? You guys say Retina=GPU hog)
3.5GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz
32GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM – (4X8GB RAM)
1TB Flash Storage
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4GB GDDR5Then I’d get a 2TB HD in a USB 3 enclosure for scratch media and thirdly some sort of Thunderbolt 2 drive Raid for my media (suggestions anyone?). I would put a second monitor on the imac for more real estate and then have a dedicated HD monitor for client. I was wondering if I go to the “garbage can” and cough up a bunch more money if I will see a performance difference. Thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks.

The Mac Pro Model Z0PK has been called the “Garbage Can” by other editors I work with purely because of the way it looks. I’m looking to the group here to give me some direction as to whether I should pursue an edit system on an iMac or a Mac Pro. The iMac is more elegant in certain respects and seems plenty powerful-and less expensive. Yet I dont want to be short sighted in making the right decision. Thanks.

We are looking at the same upgrade. Our conclusion is, if we want something that will last us for the next 2 years and save money, go with the iMac. If we want a system that will last 5 years (like our MacPro towers) and will upgrade then go with the MacPro.

Joe, interesting point. In pondering your perspective it occurred to me that if the Mac Pro is (can be configured to be) twice the price of the iMac. In that regard with the iMac’s value lasting half the duration of a Mac Pro, it’s a wash. One could buy another iMac in about two years and go again. Thoughts?

Our thinking is, the iMac may not be around in two years, you never know with Apple. The MacPro can be upgraded to take advantage of any new developments and it has a lot more connectivity built in. We’ve enjoyed the longevity we gotten from our MacPro towers so we are banking on that again for the next 5 years or more, but “you never know with Apple.”
