Preparing 1440x1080i HDV for conversion to 1080p / 24p
Hi all,
I have a bunch of event video (wedding) in 1080i HDV 30fps format (which means 1440, but I also want to widen it to 1920).
I am going to clean it up quite a bit using Neat Video.
I want to go for a “film look”, which in my case means 24p and quite a bit of color grading (SpeedGrade).
Should I do the 24p conversion as soon as possible? Is there a good description of this workflow available?
I am on Windows and I have a Creative Cloud subscription. I was thinking of using DNxHD while editing in PP CC14 and some mild After Effects work, plus the SpeedGrade work.
Does any of this look like a really bad idea?

HDV is actually 1920 wide. It’s just anamorphic HD.

Interpret the footage to run at 24fps after you’ve imported and edit in a 24fps sequence.

I have a basic understanding of what anamorphic means, but in PP the video source clip shows as 1440×1080. I will have to actually do something to cause it to become 1920, right?

I will try your interpretation tip. But will this actually cause ever so slightly slower video? I.e. each second of 30fps video will become 24, then the 6 remaining frames will be “pushed” to the next second along with the first 18 frames? Or will it simply drop 6 of the frames each second to become 24fps?

Drag the video to the new item button and it should create a timeline with the proper settings. Or you can make a custom 1440×1080 sequence and choose the HD anamorphic pixel aspect ratio.

It will change the lenght of the clip because it’s running slower. Basically it just runs the video at the new framerate showing every frame. It’s not dropping or adding frames. If you have a 24 fps sequence and you cut 30 fps footage in it then it will drop frames, but it will run the original lenght.

Hi Rune,
You are correct that an HD video clip is 1440 pixels wide. Just drop that clip into a 1920×1080 sequence and Premiere will handle it just fine, and you can export as 1920×1080 later.
Not sure about the 24 conversion, have not tried it myself
