Sound FX – Where do you guys get yours? (Specifically dramatic/impact/emphasis sounds)
Wondering if you guys have any good online sources for free or affordable sound effects? I’m looking for some studio generated dramatic or impact type sound fx. Like the sounds you would hear in a horror movie when something scary suddenly appears (or similar quick dramatic/impact/emphasis situation). I don’t even know what these are called or what type of sound fx they would be categorized as, so I’m having a heck of a time finding any online. Any advice?

Hey,
For good affordable sounds try http://www.audiolicense.net. Usually a couple of $’s for a decent sample.
However from what you’ve said it sounds like a job for foley!!!! i.e. making representative sounds yourself from everyday items, for example we cut a programme here with a scene in which the lead gets punched. We couldn’t find a good SFX anywhere so we got a mic and recorded one of us punching a cabbage, worked a treat.
Might well be worth a try, and its fun too!!

But I mean studio prodouced type effects. Like from a musical instrument. I don’t really even know how to describe them. Sort of a symphony sound. Picture a horror movie and boom from around a corner out of no where the killer appears right up in the leads face. Think of the type of sound effect they’d use there. THat’s what I’m looking for.

For sound fx, I have come to like the FreeSound project. https://freesound.iua.upf.edu/
It’s a site where people can create and share their sound fx. Things like the quality and such can be hit or miss, but they have a pretty good collection of sounds that are growing every day.
Do be mindfull of the creative commons license that each sound is released under. Some sounds for instance, may not be used in a commercial project under certain conditions. But if a license doesn’t work for what you need, you could try contacting the creator of the sound and see if he can work something out with you. I’ve done that before.
And if nothing else, I find it to be pretty useful for finding words to describe the sound that I’m looking for. Like you are saying, I often don’t know the words to describe what I need, so I just go on the site and browse around till I find something that sounds kinda similar to what I want, and than I can deduce from the tags describing that sound what some good keywords would be.

I use sounddogs.com you can they have their sound fx categorized really well and you can actually right click and save samples to try them out and if you like you can then buy the full stereo mix. They’re awesome!
