Macbook Pro Disaster
Hello everyone,
I have a MacBook Pro – 13.3″ Display – 8GB Memory – 750GB Hard Drive and it always freezes up when I’m running Premiere Pro cc or even photoshop. Not both at the same time. Just one at a time.
When I first got it, it worked fine. I had this laptop for about 6 Months now.
It’s just super super slow when I’m trying to edit videos or photos, I need to be fast and efficient for my clients. My question for you guys is … Is there some type of thing I’m suppose to do every 3 months to clear the drive or something… or clear the cache? lol, I have no Idea what to do. Maybe because I have only 160gb left of my 750gb hard drive left?? It used to be lower but I backed up ALOT of stuff to my external hard drive.
I’m thinking of getting a mac pro so I have no problems what-so-ever. These guys are made for editing and whatnot.
Any addition advice would really help! I can post additional information.

I’d personally check that the ventilation vents aren’t clogged. Because if they are the machine can’t cool fast enough and it will start to slow down.

The 13″ did not have a great video card, if I remember. I sold mine and upgraded to the 15″ with better video. Also you do run all projects off a fast external drive, right? Lastly, 8GBs is minimal for Pr, depending on your footage and complexity.. If you are keeping the Mac then upgrade the RAM. OWC has good upgrade kits.
If you need a laptop to do heavy editing, I recommend getting rid of this one. Throwing good money after bad.

I’m just thinking of biting the bullet and getting a mac pro. thanks so much for your guys reply’s. Where is a good resource to learn about this stuff?

This bulletin board is a good start. There are a number of others as well. It just takes time. No real shortcuts. I think that you should make sure you clearly know your requirements for a machine before buying one, as video production is one of the highest end uses for these computers, and underpowered machines are really frustrating.
If you are on a budget, you might consider the new iMacs. The higher end ones (27″ monitor, 1 or 2 GBs of Video RAM on a dedicated card, 16 GBs of RAM or higher, fusion drive, are all good features) are totally capable of driving most video editing.
Also, getting back to *your* requirements, if you are going to be doing 4K or RAW editing, you definitely need the most fully configured machine possible.

Generally speaking, you need to put your media files on a different spinning disk (or SSD) than your system drive. This is true of all pro app workflows. Those different spinning disks are called “scratch disks,” and in the setting panel you’ll need to tell PP where that disk is.
That’s the concept. In practice, people use many types of drives, from RAIDs to SAN to NAS and so on and so forth.
