  • How to: Particulate Dust in 3D in the “Elizebeth” HBO Promo

    Hey Cows,

There is something I would like to use in my projects that imparts real depth and organic texture. In the promo for Elizebeth (and I think the open, though i did not watch it) ther is some great dust that sits between two planes in the title sequence. It is possible it was shot in live action, but if not I was wondering if anyone knows how they did it. I can achieve simialr results with particular, but the luminosity the dust has looks hyper-real and looks like it is catching light.
    Any thoughts?

    Cheers
    -Dave-

I don’t know the promo nor the film itself, but if you mean something like in the trailer on the website, I would say it has been done in a 3D program. The variations in brightness are caused by the tumbling of the particles and the specular light reflected from them. It’s not completely impossible to create something similar in Particular, though. Animate the tumble of the particle in a pre-comp and then use “collapse transformations” in the main comp to maintain 3D properties when using this as a custom particle.

Good question! I have been trying to create this kind of dust that just floats around in the air slowly with Particular but with no luck so far. If somebody has done something like this in AE and not using a 3D app, it would have been great if you could share your findings!

    Hi.
Is it possible for you to add a link, so we can see what kind of effect you wish to do?

    That would help a lot.
