I switched to Premier a few months ago, now upgrading to CS6. Thinking of leaving the mac since my iMac just isn’t quite up to the demands of video editing.

A Mac Pro for about $3K+ would do the trick but my son in law (an IT guy)has built up several PC’s and wants me to migrate to Windows. My question is, having a good geek build a computer for an editing system a good idea? He can save me hundreds, maybe a thousand dollars or more, but what pitfalls lie ahead for the do-it-yourselfer?

As long as he can follow some basic guidelines in terms of system configuration for video editing, no pitfalls that I can think of.

Will your son-in-law be available in case something goes wrong (hard drive dies)?

Might be a good idea to post the proposed configuration (a list of components) here for some crowd-vetting.

Finally, if you do need to call someone for application-specific support (e.g. why does Premiere Pro drop frames on this timeline and not the other; how do I fix it?) that your son-in-law may not be able to answer, then consider getting a complete system from a video integrator (ADK, Puget).

(Not suggesting Boxx, HP, etc. – those will cost on a par with a Mac Pro.)

    Good point Alex.
I run into enough issues on a system designed to edit video as it is. Going homemade may not be worth the savings.
    Thanks!
