  • Recording VO using the audio mixer

I’m a long time FCP editor who’d hedging his bets by also learning Adobe Premiere Pro. I haven’t found the transition too difficult but there’s one thing I can’t figure out: How to properly record VO using the audio mixer with my current setup. I’ve looked at a bunch of tutorials and blog posts showing me how to properly setup the interface in PP so I’m guessing the problem is somewhere in my audio/capture card settings but I’m lost at this point. I’m sorry if this ends up focusing on my capture card instead of Premiere.

I have a mic going line in to my Mackie board. (mic levels are active on the audio board) The board feeds the analog signal into my Blackmagic (BM) card. I have a signal generator sending a video signal for the the BM card to lock to. In my BM system prefs I have my input set to: Composite Video (Y In) & Analog XLR Audio. This exact setup works perfectly for recording scratch VO into FCP7 via the capture window.

When I get into Premiere Pro I create a new sequence using my BlackMagic preset for DV res. I configure my workspace to the audio setup. I enable track one for recording in the audio mixer, solo the track, make sure my target is set to use BlackMagic audio (directly above the track in the audio mixer), target a mono audio track in my timeline, and check the meter inputs only box to on in the mixer menu. In preferences – audio hardware my default device is set to Blackmagic audio yet I still get no audio input. (I am able to record and insert a silent audio channel into my sequence.)

I’ve noticed that if I toggle back and fourth the Blackmagic settings in my system preferences and then tab back to the audio mixer I briefly have active levels for a few seconds and then nothing… What am I doing wrong here?

My specs should be listed in my signature. I’m using BlackMagic v. 8.2.1 so that shouldn’t be the issue. I’ve also attached a screen grab collage of my settings. Any suggestions or help troubleshooting are greatly appreciated. I realize that I can use an adapter and plug the mic directly into my Mac Pro but I’d prefer to keep my current setup and make it work for both editing systems.

Here are some resources I’ve already gone through (they are very helpful):

can’t help too much with your setup, but i can tell you that i went through a similar issue 2 weeks ago. I had to capture analog video and audio into the box. I ran the audio through my mixer, and out to my extreme 3d card. Prefs were set to analog audio…just like yours. Premiere set to capture from blackmagic, not dv or hdv. I could monitor the video coming into the box, but not the audio…so i assumed it wasn’t going in, but upon playback of my captured clip, it was there. I posted a question about this on this forum. (monitor audio) but got no responses. I don’t think Premiere will show us the audio as an input source…only playback from timeline.

You are saying you’ve tried to play back your capture, and there is nothing there? Maybe feed it a true video source as well (vhs or dvd…anything with an actual signal)

    Glenn,
I was finally able to get a scratch VO in using my current setup. However, I was not able to use the Voice Over tool. I set my Blackmagic input settings in System Preferences to Composite Video (Y In) & Analog XLR Audio. Then I created a new sequence using Blackmagic DV (generic) settings – although any Blackmagic preset works. Next I opened the Capture window, set the device control to None, Capture Settings to Blackmagic Capture with 2 channels of audio (no option for just one channel). When I press record I’m unable to see any audio levels in the capture widow (although I just watch the Mackie board’s meters) but they do, in fact, record.

So, it’s not as elegant as the Voice Over tool but it gets the job done. Thanks for sharing your experience – that’s what tipped me off to using the generic capture window instead of the VO tool.

    Have a good one.

I am having simialr trouble with the voice over tool in PP CS6.

Running my V/O mic through my Scarlet 2i2 usb box. All the settings in PP seem to be fine, the audio input is metering on the track I want to record to, the track is armed and PP seems to recognise the preamp, but when I hit record, I get no audio at all, nothing records.

    Flummoxed. Can anyone help?
