  Exporting to web/pc

  Hi all,

  Been hunting around for a complete answer to this question for a while and have yet to find one.

  When exporting a SD DV PAL video for web or PC playback I normally try to downsize to the usual ‘PC’ dimensions, such as 640×480 (square pixels).

  This normally results in black bars on the top and bottom. To get rid of them I crop the source to width 704 pix, removing 8 pix from each side taking into consideration the over scan area.

  Is this the right way of doing this or am I going about it in the wrong way?

  That’s the only way I know of. PAL’s native aspect ratio makes the pixels slightly wider, so once you conform, it adds that width.

  That’s the first straight answer I’ve had about this topic.

  I cannot find any PAL based guides for best practise in this area anywhere.

  The reason I asked is that a while ago I was on a forum about something else and mentioned that I needed to crop the image to get rid of the bars.

  Suddenly I had a load of replies stating that there was no need to crop and that I was doing something wrong. From then on it I was unable to find any further info about this.

  Well there is no need to crop, say if you’re embedding a quicktime player into a page, as it’ll recognize the pixel ratio, but anything flash based Id play it safe and crop because it’ll be converted to square pixel. NTSC has the same/similar issue as DV resolution actually needs to be slightly cropped for the change to digital broadcasting.
