Premiere CS is converting all my Stero into “2 mono” WHY?
So there I am, happily editing away. I import a stereo MP3 only to find that Premiere CS4 has made it into 2 mono tracks.
OK, so then I import an MP3 stereo file that is ALREADY in the project as a stereo file only to see the new import (the very same file) as a 2 mono!
What is going on? I know that I can go through the menus to change it back but why is it suddenly changing all my inputs to mono?
All the projects settings I can find are set to stereo. All audio defaults settings I can find are set to stereo. These are simple stereo MP3 tracks, which yesterday Premiere CS4 treated as such. Today it is turning them all in to 2 mono tracks.
Specifics:
“Track 1 (already in Premiere) 44,100 KHz – Compressed – Stereo”
Then I import Track 1 again and this time…
“Track 1 44,100 KHz – Compressed – 2 mono”
can you help?

As to why it does this in the first place… I dunno. I do know how to fix it though.
Your audio clip cannot be used in a timeline yet. In your project bin, right click it and select Modify > Audio Channels. You can then select from (what it’s probably chosen as now) Mono, which will split it into two mono tracks, to stereo which will give left and right a combined stereo track
