system problem or setting problem with playback in CS4?
First…Hi, first time posting on here. Not a professional, just an amateur looking to edit/export some basic videos. I had a friend give me an old version of premier 1.5 and I learned to do what I wanted on that and I’m used to it, so I just upgraded to CS4 because my old premiere 1.5 couldn’t even import mp4 files and I would eventually like to get more creative.
However, I can’t get CS4 to play or preview clips at all…the audio plays fine, and I can edit however I want, but when I play/preview, the video does nothing (well, the first few frames will load, but it won’t play any farther than that over the course of the entire clip).
Now, my laptop isn’t exactly new (Dell Inspiron 1720), but I’ve got dual core 2.0hz processor, 3gb RAM…not sure what speed my HD is…but I’m not looking for super faster rendering or exporting here, I just want to do some basic preview and editing. And my problem isn’t with anything crashing or not processing fast enough or even being ‘jerky’….it just won’t load past the first few frames.
I feel like something simple might not be setup right under ‘preferences’, but I’m not expert enough to figure it out. I found this post, but it didn’t help (I don’t have the option to choose anything other than “Premiere Pro WDM Sound”)

What type of footage are you working with? AVCHD is very processor-intensive and can be an issue even on workstations, it may be that the laptop is not up to par for this task

just raw .avi files. nothing in HD.
the video source is a VIO POV 1.5 (helemet cam)…writes directly to a memory card and I upload that to my hard drive.

Just checked out the VIO POV 1.5 unit, very cool.
What record settings did you use? For NTSC video, you’d want the 720×480 30fps setting. I hope the “30fps” means 29.97, which is the actual standard for video in the US (Europe uses PAL video at 25fps).
Whichever mode you recorded in, make sure the frame size and frame rate matches in the Premiere Project Settings, and check that the proper Divx codec is installed, might be on a CD that came with the camera.

thx Jeff…yes, 30fps (I’ll have to double check on the “29.97”, but I’m willing to bet its right).
I’ll triple check I have the project dimensions (720×480) correct as well, but i don’t think that’s it.
It could be the codec…when I first tried playing these files on my laptop I couldn’t get them to play at all on MS Media player or anything (just the sound came out)…so that’s a good bet.

so I just checked the ‘file properties’ and confirmed with Gspot that the fps for this file is actually 30.00 and not 29.97……crap….now what?

Divx is a pain in the b…
Its highly compressed, suitable for watching but not for editing.
Best is to find a converter and convert the footage to dv-avi.
With divx the changes of getting it right is very slim.
