Zoom in Place?
Hi all,
I’m a basic to intermediate level Premiere Pro user. I am working on a project for my children. I would love to create several blocks of video/stills a la the opening sequence of the Brady Bunch or the cutaways of the show 24. The problem I’m having is that I want to zoom and motion the video and my “blocks” are covering each other up. Is there a way for me to zoom and motion video and keep it within set boundaries?
I hope that I have explained what I am looking for. Please let me know if you need further information. I’m new to forums. I submit myself to your expertise.

Be sure to R-click on the clip and Field Options/Always Deinterlace, before scaling and motion, if your footage interlaced and you don’t intend to use another deinterlacing technique.
For the Brady Bunch part, maybe try Video Effect/Distort/Transform, for sizing and positioning. Look into keyframing in the Window/Effect Controls tab.
With the clip selected in the timeline, click the stopwatch that is next any of the effect’s parameters to create a keyframe. Create additional keyframes along the timeline to record different settings.
You can also increase the shutter angle, and uncheck Use Composition to add motion blur, for smoother looking clip-position motion. 140 would be a strong shutter angle.For Zoom, you can probably use the Scale parameter.
You might also use Video Effect/Distort/Crop.
You could also create a File/New/Black Video, that you could scale with the motion parameters, to create black bars.
The settings for your version may vary.

Thanks for the advice. I am still left with one problem though. I think I may not have explained my problem very well. Imagine the opening sequence of the Brady Bunch. However imagine that I wanted to zoom into all of the pictures of the family members. Right now I have a grid drawn but when I zoom using the motion->scale effect the family members grow over top of the other family members. What I am looking for is to be able to zoom into the family members while keeping the same grid size and not impede on other grids photos/video.
I hope I have explained what I am looking for. I’m sure there has to be an elegant way to achieve this effect.

I’m thinking there are at least two ways to do that.
Using Video Effect/Distort/Crop on the clips.
Or..
Using the Track Matte Key (Video Effects/Keying/Track Matte, I think?)
You could create an alpha channel/matte, in Photoshop. You would create a layer for each ‘grid box’. Each of these layers would be solid black, and have a white square in the position that you want the video to pass through.
Each layer would have only one white square.
You could save each layer as it’s own file, or I think you might be able to choose individual layers during import into Premiere.
Each of these PS layers would be in it’s own layer in the Premiere project, and function as an alpha channel for the corresponding video layer.Here’s a small tutorial on how to properly layer your project, and set up the Track Matte Key…
