Tearing inside of Monitor and in final avi
Hey there! So I’m working on outputting some footage from Premiere to DVD.
The help file says that the best way to handle this is to use footage that’s 720×540 that has square pixels, then import it into a scene whose project is set up to produce 720×480 with a 0.9 pixel aspect ratio. So when I import my 720×540 footage, it does resize it to fit the size of the 720x480x0.9 project, but I get terrible tearing in the image, see link below. It’s almost like part of the resize happens by just skipping every 10th line of the original source image, which causes horrible stair stepping on diagonal lines.

When I output it to uncompressed avi, I get the same awful tearing, so it’s not just an odd artifact in the monitor. Does anyone know how you can change the downres settings in premiere so it does a better job of down-resing the 720×540 footage to 720×480?

The clip was probably scaled with the motion parameters, under the Effect Controls tab.
Look in the Project settings and uncheck ‘Scale clips…’. Than, reset the clip to 100%.
Use Video Effects/Distort/Transform to resize clips. It’s a bit more processor intensive, but it does a better job at scaling.

Thanks for the response.
It sounds like you may have a more recent copy of Premiere than I do (I’m using Premiere 6.0) since I do not have a ‘Scale clips…’ in project settings (although I did find a “better resize” in the export Special processing section, which seems to do very little).
Are you using Premiere CS 3? If so, looks like it’s time for me to upgrade.

I’m in PP 1.5. I’m surprised that there is no effect in PP 6 that handles scaling..

Well, there is an effect to scale the footage. There’s just no way I can find to stop it from auto-scaling the footage when it brings it in.
After some poking around, it looks like after effects does a better job of scaling than premiere does, so I’m going to see if I can do my final edit in after effects instead. Thanks for your help, it’s most appreciated.
