Problem importing targa sequence into Premiere Elements 4
Hello all,
I am having problems importing a targa sequence into Premiere Elements 4.0 (PC version). I believe that I am importing it correctly but for some reason it only imports the first frame of the animation.
The targa sequence was created in AfterEffects 7 (Mac version) with the following options:
– 32 bits/pixels
– With alpha channel embedded
– RLE compression (box checked)
– Straight unmatted
The output files are a total of 289 files with the filenames next_00000.tga, next_00001.tga, next_00002.tga and so on.Here’s a step by step of how I am trying to import it into Premiere Elements 4:
– I click on Get Media Tab
– I click on Files and Folders
– In the file dialog box I navigate to the folder where the targa sequence lives
– I click on the first image in the sequence (next_00000.tga) and then check the “numbered stills” box. Then I click Open.
– It only opens the first frame and not the whole animation.I’ve also tried exporting the file in AE with different options, such as flattened layers, separating the alpha channel into two sequences, etc and it still will not import properly. Any ideas? I’m stumped.
If it matters, I can import the targa sequence perfectly into Sony’s Vegas Pro 6.0, so I doubt it’s a problem with the output files.

I’m unsure why the Numbered Stills option isn’t working, maybe a cross-platform thing?? :-/
Could you simply Shift-Select all of the image files, during import? Or, Import/Import Folder?
Note, in Premiere Pro you would go into Preferences/Still Images and set the default duration for imported stills before dropping the stills into the timeline, to whatever is appropriate for the project. I’m not sure if this preference is available in Elements?

Could you set your After Effects output to…
Channels: RGB + Alpha
Depth: Millions +
Color: Straight
…and export as an uncompressed AVI or MOV file?Vince

I doubt it’s a cross platform thing. As I said it works when imported in Sony’s Vegas Pro which is on a PC.
I tried shift selecting all of the image files, as well as selecting the directory, but that still does not work.
Exporting as an uncompressed AVI or MOV file is not an option, since we receive the targa sequence from a third party vendor. The reason we want to import the targa file sequence in the first place is to render out MOV files on our own.
It must be a bug in the Adobe Premiere elements software (go figure since it’s being exported in Adobe AfterEffects). I just find it strange that the Sony Vegas opens it just fine.
Any thoughts on what else I can try?
