  Best quality output

  Hi

  I’m only a hobbyist and am trying to get to grips with Premiere pro 1.5. I appreciate for some of you professionals out there that this may sound like a stupid question so I apologise in advance. All I want to do is take my home movie footage (mini DV), edit it a bit and then put it onto DVD but keep the quality as high as possible. What is the best way to achieve this please?

  What editing program are you using?

  The simplest way is to export your video as a DV-AVI file from Premiere Pro. Then let your DVD authoring program handle the transcoding for best quality. Adobe Encore, for example, has an “automatic” setting that will use the maximum quality setting so that all of your video will fit on the disc. For reference, you can put about 60-90 minutes of video on a standard 4GB DVD before you’ll start seeing quality issues.

  The other way to go is to export directly out of Premiere Pro as an MPEG-2 file, ready for DVD. That way you can control the amount of compression applied. It’s up to you to manage the data for the DVD, though. If you use the highest settings but you have a lot of video, it won’t all fit on one disc. Getting the balance between quality and file size right is called “bit budgeting”.

  I can’t remember the name of the software I have but I believe it is made by Ulead. I don’t suppose it is the greatest software in the world but it is simple. Maybe I should invest in Encore, or is there anything better available?
