quadcore nehalem work ok for Premiere Pro?
I am about to buy a 2009 mac pro and was hoping that a quad core with 8gigs ram would be enough for editing.
ANy comments would be appreciated.

If you are cutting SD, you’ll get by. HD with some more demanding codecs or 4K, you will likely want more RAM.
If you will be doing any work in After Effects you will most certainly want more RAM.
System:
Dell Precision T7600 (x2)
Win 7 64-bit
32GB RAM
Adobe CC 2014 (as of 7/2015)
256GB SSD system drive
4 internal media drives RAID 5
Typically cutting short form from HD MP4 and P2 MXF. -
I’d suggest 24 or 32 gigs of RAM and probably a video card upgrade (assuming it didn’t already get one).

Thanks. No one has commented on just a quad core…so
if I am reading this right the amount of ram is more important?I am seeing 4 8 and 12 core 2009 Mac Pros and of course understand that more is better but wanted to see if I could get by with a single quad core Nehalem processor.
Not editing 4k stuff just 1080hD files.

Ah, I didn’t realize that the ’09’s were available in single CPU configurations. I’d definitely go with two CPUs. I have a 2009, 2.66Ghz 8-core MP with 24gigs of RAM and a GTX 660 Ti GPU (w/2gigs of RAM). I also put in an eSATA/USB 3 PCI card and will probably swap out the boot HDD for an SSD.
I mainly use it with compressed HD formats (XDCAM EX, AVCHD, etc.,) and I have no complaints (taking into consideration its age). I have also done a little work with 4K and 5K files just dropping the playback quality to 1/4 makes it go pretty smooth (I can even put in a couple layers like using a green screen).
