.MTS file has harsh colors/color banding
Hi,
I have search for a solution for this problem but had no luck. My problem is that I got the raw footage of my wedding from the videographer we hired. When I play the video in Windows Media Player, VLC, or Media Player Classic, or even edit it in Premiere, I get this harsh colors especially on highlighted areas. It is like someone slapped a saturation filter on it! Here are the screen shot samples:

https://berkeleycup.com/sample/Sample_2.jpgI don’t have the entire AVCHD folder in tact because the videographer only copied the files directly to my portable hard drive and the original folder was already deleted in his computer.
I really need to edit this for our anniversary. Please, if anyone can help you would be a big help! Thank you in advanced.

It looks like their camera settings where way out of whack. Nothing to do with the MTS file itself.
Here is what I could do on your samples with a quick fix using the Broadcast Colors effect and the 3 Way Color Corrector in Premiere. I hope this can give you a starting point for restoration.

Thank you very much for your reply. I can really use these for a start. Regarding the video files, the videographer already edited a video for us previously and it looks perfectly fine. But when I got the MTS files and played them, they look like the screen shots I have provided. It puzzles me. I have tried converting the videos to MOV, MP4, etc. but to no avail. Any other thoughts?

I have never seen MTS files change like you say. If they looked OK before they should be fine now. It seems if any information was omitted they would not play at all. I hope someone has an answer, I’m curious.

Here are a couple of possibilities, one very cynical, and the other slightly less.
1 – The original clips indeed do look like the ones that he sent to you, and he performed a lot of color grading for your edit.
2 – Here are two screen shots of the same frame from two different AVCHD files.

Not common, in fact I’ve never heard of it being done this way, but I HAVE seen videographers, when asked for raw footage that they shot so that the requester can edit a new video with it send watermarked versions of the clips. Same end result.

Again thank you for your reply. I also don’t know why the video files are this way. Anyway, do you happen to have the presets for the Broadcast Colors and 3 Way Color Corrector? I would really appreciate it. Thanks a ton!

Hi Joe,
I found something unusual. I was backing up my laptop and found another folder containing the same MTS files. When I opened the same file as the one above, it is in normal color! How funny is that? Maybe it converted while copying to multiple devices previously? This is just mind boggling. I am just grateful that I found a copy of the original files. whew. Thank you for your help and I hope you help more people like me.

Very strange indeed, but I’m glad you can now restore your video.
I copied a card of MTS files the other day, just by dragging and copying to another folder. For some reason half of the clips ended up with no audio. I copied again and everything was OK. Usually we transfer files from the cards using ShotPut Pro and have not had one problem in three years. I was in a hurry, dragged and dropped, and almost got burned. From now on I will always use a program to verify the transfer.

Again, thank you for your time and help. I totally agree with you that for MTS files, you should transfer by a program or by copying the entire folder structure and not just drag and drop the files. Whew! Hopefully this does not happen to other people.

Thank you for your reply. I have resolved the issue when I located another copy in another hard drive. The colors were all good and back to normal. I am not sure why that is the case but I am really relieved that I recovered the good copies of the clips. I was also previously suspecting that the videographer intentionally color graded the clips. But they are friends of mine and they would not do that with me. 🙂 Anyway, thank you for helping people like us!
