  • Use Previews and Match Sequence Settings checkboxes giving me MASSIVE export times

Posted by Jake Keller on October 25, 2014 at 1:45 am

I’m using the most recent update of CC 2014 from this October. I’m on a ProRes (HQ) timeline of native MXF footage that has already been rendered for a 30 second spot. My export times are around 15 minutes with Match Sequence settings and Use Previews checked off. This has never happened before and I’m wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same issues. Usually they’re really quick and it’s the same spot as before so nothing has changed other than my software update. Any ideas?

How many filters and such are you using? Are your Previews I-Frame MPEG? If so, they will most likely re-render as QT before outputting.

We’ve found instances where faulty media (at least how Adobe reads and writes it) can cause crazy render times. We’re talking 45 min render time for 15 seconds of footage where we only want to remove one frame of black. Should take seconds to export.

The solution in our case is changing the output format. We’ve had the issue happen with both ProRes 4444 to ProRes 444 and with ProRes 422HQ to ProRes 422HQ. It sounds like you’re using MFX as you source, however, if your render files in the sequence as ProRes and you’re outputing to the render format, you might have the same issue as we do.

What I’ve ended up doing is either:
    a) Re-endcode my input source
    b) Change output format

I have a few dynamic linked comps for title animations and some adjustment layers for color correction, but changing my sequence settings to something other than ProRes solved the issue. I now get about a minute and a half export time. Thanks so much for the help. It’s a pity that that the ProRes codecs are having issues inside Premiere.

I think I’ve noticed that unchecking Use Previews recently actually seemingly makes it much faster. As if it is actually MAKING it use previews or something. I would give that a shot.
