  • Major Problems with AJA Io XT and PP2014

Posted by Bob Pierce on October 16, 2014 at 2:37 pm

Is anyone else having problems with playback using the latest PP (8.1) and the Io XT?

It is intermittently stuttery, with dropouts and crackle. If I turn off the io for playback Premiere plays back fine using the computer monitor. I’ve tried everything – updated CUDA, all sorts of preferences, disabled plug ins and the problem persists.

I spent a good amount of time with tech support at both Adobe and AJA but haven’t had any improvement.

My system consists of a late 2012 iMac with 680MX. Interestingly, I tried using my MacBook pro retina with the same hardware and got exactly the same issue, so it doesn’t seem to be an issue with the iMac.

Anyone out there using the IO XT with success?
    Thanks,
    Bob Pierce

    Hi Bob,

This is a known issue with the 10.5.2 plugin. I suggest reverting back to 10.5.1 or you can try the following steps that in some cases elevate the problems.

    1. Set the Primary format in the AJA Control panel to match your sequence settings.

    2. Avoid mixed frame rates in your sequence

    3. Go to AJA control panel -> Control:
    a. Make sure the default output is not set to Inputpassthrough because it forces the genlock to video in.
    b. Set Genlock to Ref In or Freerun.

    4. Go to Premiere Project Settings -> General -> Set Video Render Playback to GPU if it is an option.

    5. Go to Premiere preferences -> Audio Hardware:
    a. Set Adobe Desktop Audio to built-in
    b. Set buffersize to 512

    6. Go to Premiere preferences -> Playback:
    a. Set Audio device to AJA
    b. Check the AJA Io 4K as the video device.
    c. Click on Setup and set video format to Match Sequence.
    d. Try Buffer mode set to Minimum

    7. Set Premiere Preview to FULL resolution

    8. Go to system preferences -> Sound -> Output and set to Mac Audio.

    9. Delete all the AJA preferences:
    a. Go to Mac HD: /users/username/library/preferences/
    b. Delete all the com.aja.* files
    c. Reboot

AJA and Adobe are aware the issue and working to resolve it. Sorry for the troubles.

    Hi Peter,
Thank you so much for the quick response! I’ve deleted the Aja prefs and am trying your settings now. The problem is intermittent, so it may take a while for it to raise it’s ugly head again.

Just to be clear – you’re suggesting rolling back to the Adobe plug in v 10.5.1, not the Aja driver?
    Thanks!
    Bob

    Peter,

Are these same issues applied to the io4K as well? One of our editors is using the io4k on a 4K project and the audio is horrible when Transmit is enabled in Premiere. Do you recommend going back to 10.5.1 on the io4K as well?

    Hi Bob:

We are still having this issues after trying all this, is your system working better? We finally gave up on AJA and bought 2 Blackmagic Cards and no problems so far. The only reason I would try Aja again is because Blackmagic is very noisy.

    Thanks,

I’d like to chime in…I work at a production facility where we shoot 4 how to shows for network…we had initially been setup with mac pro (2013) and aja IO 4k with premiere pro and my experience fighting with aja and premiere has been insane. We had constant problems with the aja software locking up premiere. Now Premiere has some little bugs here and there but these lock ups related to the aja…we would unplug the aja and, viola!, the computer lived again. Had synch issues, phantom audio glitches, playback problems. I was able to arrange a blackmagic ultrastudio 4k loaner to test and AS SOON AS AJA SOFTWARE WAS REMOVED THE COMPUTER RAN LIKE A CHARM! Installed blackmagic utility and the ultrastudio works perfectly. Now the fan noise is wayyyy louder on blackmagic so plan on where to position that buggah. Recap…when aja software is removed, system works like it should.
    Thanks all

    Hi Brett:

Thanks for the email, although Aja and Premiere seem to be getting along better for us I had a similar experience to yours, Blackmagic worked way better, we have not switched because of the noise, since we have clients in the room most of the time and it is just too loud for a small edit room, we only plug it in when we need to use Resolve. Can’t have the best of both worlds I guess.

    Thanks,

    AN

    Hi Brett,

If you haven’t done so already I recommend contacting the AJA support team https://www.aja.com/en/support

They should be able to get you up and running again with their hardware.

    Hope all goes well!

    Hello there,
yes I had been in touch with aja support and they had not encountered the problems we were having and it was too much at the time where we were getting behind on episode edits unfortunately. So the problem had to be remedied quickly.
