Combining mixed resolutions: 7D and Red Scarlet
Hi,
I’m editing a pop promo that was a two camera shoot – Canon 7D and Red Scarlet. The Scarlet shot 2k – 4k depending on lens sizes and framerate.
Online, they look drastically different. I doesn’t help that it was a low light shoot, so there’s artefacts in the blacks of the 7D. How would people suggest I go about making the two images look more equal?

They’re completely different cameras, so unfortunately they are probably going to look different no matter what you do. Obviously, color correct to match the shots as close as possible. Here’s a Creative Cow tutorial that addresses this issue.
You can look into the Remove Grain effect in After Effects or Neat Video’s noise removal plugin for Premiere to help the your low light footage.

He’s right. One is full sensor…a kick ass full sensor…so it does very well in low light. The other has a much smaller sensor, and does poorly in low light. You would have had better luck matching a 5D with the RED. It also wouldn’t have been easy…again, different cameras…and compression comes into play. But the 5D has a full size sensor, and handles low light better.

You’ll be pulling your hair out trying to match the blacks from a 7D to most any other camera. Resign yourself to getting “good enough” on some shots.
