  • Premiere Pro CC will not play any media after clicking outside the program

This is a nightmare. I’m cutting in Premiere Pro CC on an iMac (specs below), and every time I have to do anything outside of the program (using Finder, or Chrome, for example – anything), when I come back to PP, no media will play. I can still manipulate things in the project window, and even make edits in the timeline, but no media will play in either the source or record windows. At all.

Also, when I try to quit PP (the only way to get around this issue), I can’t. It tries to quit and then just hangs there until I force quit.

For a while, I’ve been doing my best to work around this, and just force quitting when I had to. Now, thanks to some other issue involving the CC license I’m working with, my iMac thinks my install of PP is a trial version, and so when I open PP, it throws a pop-up at me asking if I want to continue the trial or license the program. Because this pop-up is from outside Premiere, it causes Premiere to freeze. So, effectively, I can no longer open Premiere.

I just reinstalled Premiere, updating it to the 2014 build, but the problem persists. Maybe it’s an issue with my iMac, but I just don’t know. I’m trying to fix the license problem, but that still doesn’t solve the freeing issue. I’m really hoping someone can give me some guidance.

    iMac specs:
    mid 2011
    12 GB 1333 Mhz DDR3
AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB
    Mac OSX Lion 10.7.5″

Cutting with media on an external Thunderbolt drive.

    Hi Ned,

I’m unable to reproduce what your experiencing. Have you cleaned your system lately? Wiped Premiere Pro prefs and cache files? Any need to stay on 10.7.5? There will plenty of improvements in 10.8.5. Not sure if this will solve the issue but hopefully Premiere will run more smoothly with the update.
