    Hi,

I’m doing a showreel showcasing my skills and the stuff I’ve done. I work as a colorist and an editor and I’d like to do a single showreel to share. My problem is, that some of the stuff that I’ve graded, I haven’t edited and vice versa. The solution would obviously be to make two different reels, but that seems somewhat cumbersome.
What would be an elegant way to go about this? Obviously I’d like to show some before/after clips of the stuff I’ve graded and just some snippets of stuff I’ve edited, but I don’t want people to think that I’ve graded something that I haven’t!
    Any suggestions?

    Best Regards,
    Daniel

Add slates. “Editing…” Then all your editing stuff. Then “Color Grading…” and all your grading samples.

Yeah, but some of the stuff I’ve edited I have also graded, so it’s hard to keep it separate…

I run into this all the time with my demo stuff, since some of the time, I’m doing contract work as an animator, and my work is edited in with other content which I’ve had no involvement with. Some of the time, I just do the titles, or color correction. My solution has been to create white text on a black screen which dissolves up at the end of the piece, explaining just what my creative involvement was. Example: “The elements presented here are six contract animations, produced for xxx xxxxxxxx.” or some sort of similar, specific text which can’t be misconstrued. Sometimes I need to show my work within the context of an editor’s work, and I don’t want to lay claim to something I didn’t do, even unintentionally.

Okay, but I want to do a quick musical flashy showreel for commercial use. It shouldn’t last more than one and a half minutes. I want to use it as a quick way to showcase my skills and versatility, without having to bore potential clients with text upon text, which will probably deter them from watching the whole thing.
I think I’ll just cut together a nice fast paced and flashy showreel showing some before/after bits of stuff I’ve graded and just put “Colorist” in the bottom left corner or “Editor”, depending on my roll…
    Thanks for the input, though!
