Creating Less Cinematic Footage
Posted by Nick Corder on May 6, 2014 at 11:45 pmEverywhere I look there is a tutorial on how to give your film the “cinematic” look. Well, frankly asceticism is fading away and the world of film is giving way to new ideas of beauty. My question is for advice making my film look less cinematic. I have experimented with lowering contrast and with diffusion filters to no avail. The resolution on my camera is simply looking “too good” for my own taste. Are there any other secrets that could help me to achieve my goal?

May 7, 2014 at 8:42 pmI was imagining such experimental films such as those of Kenneth Anger, and also the work of Lubezki in Y Tu Mama Tambien.

May 8, 2014 at 4:32 pmI just watched the trailer for Y Tu Mama Tambien and it looks pretty cinematic to me. The Kenneth Anger clips I watched appear to focus mostly on color balance, masks, opacity layers, and Y levels.
To get the right answer, it helps to ask the right question. Can you identify specific parameters such as color cast, saturation, luminance profile, et cetera; or at least provide specific clips that capture what you mean?

May 8, 2014 at 8:19 pmThose were my specific examples. I guess the question was vague. Thank you for addressing the Kenneth Anger videos. My thought process in regard to the issue was that if “cinematic” material is so easily identifiable than its antithesis would be as well. I’ve been looking into selective sharpening, which I think is what I was looking for originally.
