Hi everybody, i`m seeking information about, how Premiere CS6, handle system codecs (in my case windows 7).

*For example I’m not being able to import “.mov” files, until I have installed “quicktime 7”.
*Or even, XDCAM wrapped in a “.mov” file (transferred in FCP7), can not be read it, whitout “Calibrated-XD codec”, which is installed in the system (not in the premiere root folder).

I mean, the program natively support certain codecs and wrappers, but Im thinking, in some point, premiere look at the system codecs.
Where I can find information about it.

    Thanks

Premiere looks at system codecs for Quicktime and AVI. The exception are h.264 quicktime files – these are recognized by Premiere and Premiere’s more optimized playback decoder kicks in.

There are some addition codecs that do extra system registration specifically for Premiere – Blackmagic and GoPro Cineform do so they show up as extra items on the main list and not just as codecs under Quicktime or AVI.

About what in the process? Looking up info on the following SDKs will shed more light about what goes on.

AVI codecs are controlled by Windows DirectX system – I think “DirectPlay”

Quicktime has its own system outlined in its SDK

I also believe Premiere’s SDK goes over how codecs can register themselves.

Most of these issues arise from forces outside of Adobe.

Many FCP Log and Capture rewraps are unique to FCP and Apple has kept them proprietary.

QuickTime is required per Adobe…it’s in the system requirements. Any QT codec is accessible that Apple doesn’t control as proprietary (such as FCP rewraps of XDcam and DVCProHD files and the ability to write ProRes on any machine that doesn’t have FCP or Motion installed).
