I have a 1024×576 file. I need to export to 4:3 format but keep the resolution. I try this and I’m getting a M4v folder rather than a Mp4 movie. What am I doing wrong? Thank you kindly.

M4V is a video only file. If you check the export audio box, you’ll get an MP4.

You might also see an M4V until the render is complete.

m4v is the extension for Apple device (iPhone/iPad/iTunes/AppleTV) compatible video. It’s actually Mpeg 4 in a Quicktime container, as well. It is not a video-only format.

It is when you do a Premiere (Main-concept H.264) export as video only, without checking the audio.

I guess you need 4:3 for a XGA projector? Create a 1024×768 sequence and place the clip here without adapting the clip settings, and export as H264. This will letterbox the clip in 4:3 format.

“It is when you do a Premiere (Main-concept H.264) export as video only, without checking the audio.”

Well, that would be pretty much true with any codec. If you select not to export audio, you won’t get any.

Now if we are discussing m2v for DVD production…yes, that is video only, as typically you create an m2v file for the video and a compressed AC3, mp2, DTS or uncompressed .wav or .aif file for the audio.

Correct, but in this case, no selecting audio creates an m4v file instead of an mp4. That m4v (which in this case is video only:-) is much less compatible and will not play in many applications/web players.

Thank you very much! That worked. I didn’t have audio on this clip so I didn’t choose that option when exporting. Works fine now.

Thank you John. I’ve learned something. I didn’t have audio on this clip so I didn’t choose that option when exporting. Works fine now.
