  • What is the best way to use Live Trace in Illustrator with After Effects?

    Hi there,

Basically ive scanned in a drawing and used Live Trace in illustrator cs2 to create a mask that i have then copied into after effects. I hope I did it properly, i pressed expand and then it brought up all the points and copied over. I then have a solid ive copied them onto but the problem is there are about 1000 masks and it takes ages to render anything! Whats the best way of having less masks or doing it more effieciently so that it renders quickly…….if there is a way? Is there sometihng in illustrator i should do?

Thanks again, hope this is the right forum!

    Cheers

    Dan

Why are you copying the points and pasting them into AE? Do you need those points or just the image.

If just the image, don’t bother expanding, jsut save the image as an AI file, and then import it into AE as you normally import illustrator files (File > Import > File).

If you want those points to stroke over time in AE, then yes, you have to import the strokes and do what you’re doing.

Unfortunately, a complex images has many paths, and this could really slow AE down.

Conmsider lowering the number of colors and detail in your Live trace.
