Lords of Dogtown Spraypaint Effect
Posted by Tilden Jones on June 5, 2006 at 10:11 pmCan someone tell me how to achieve the “SRAYPAINT EFFECT” like the opening credits in the movie Lords of Dogtown in After Effects?
Thanks

June 6, 2006 at 12:00 pmI did not see this movie. But it sounds like a kind of graffity effects.
I just did a little experimenting on this. I combined the “animate paint” effect (not sure, if this is its english name) with some stuff that aharon did in his latest tutorial:
https://www.creativecow.net/articles/rabinowitz_aharon/horror_text2/index.htmlhad to dublicate the liquify effects, because of the timing of the graffity-spraying.
With some time of work, this looks quite good.

First thing, you need a texture.
Then, you use “animate paint” (or whatever its called), not to write a text, but to animate a luma mask.
Then take some time to apply liquify, as it is shown in the tutorial by aharon, that could work out.—-

June 7, 2006 at 5:22 amAh, I see. Looks pretty much like what we already suggested – using the Liquify effect would definitely do the trick to create the illusion of the paint dripping. The spray strokes themselves could be created using Write-on or Stroke, treated with Roughen Edges and some mild blur and noise.
