  Project settings SD and HD footage going to DVD

  I am using Premiere CS6.
  I have a 75 minute project that is now going to DVD. I have both SD and HD footage and pretty successfully used software to upsize the standard def footage but do I need to if going to DVD? Should I transcode the 1920X1080 into something more manageable because I have been unable to burn a DVD of it yet without it crashing? Thanks!

  I would set up a SD sequence and drop everything into that. Just scale the HD down.
  Export to mpeg2-dvd.
  Bring that into Encore, make menu and burn.

  Hi Anthony,

  To expand on Ann’s suggestion, the reason for working in an SD sequence is simple – if you work in an HD sequence, all of the SD material needs to be upscaled. Then, when you export to DVD, it gets downscaled again. Being scaled twice destroys the quality of the original SD video, far better off to keep the SD native the whole time.

  In Premiere Preferences, there is a checkbox for “Scale to Frame Size”. Check that, and any imports done after that will automatically scale to match the sequence, meaning the HD clips will scale down in the SD sequence. You should not have to convert the HD clips first. If your system is crashing on HD material, it may be inadequate or have other issues. You can also right-click a clip on the timeline and set the Scale option there.

  Hi Jeff, thanks for the info. I’ve got it taken care of BUT my sd footage has black bars to start so bringing in the hd footage and fit to screen it has it also. Does the project need to start as widescreen? The majority of sd material is 24P. Appreciate your help

  As ALL HD footage is 16:9 widescreen, it would be preferable to edit as widescreen SD as well then. Are you saying the SD clips are 16:9? Then absolutely, use a widescreen sequence to edit. As for the frame rates, that is another story.
