Dynamic Link between AE and Premiere pro
Hey guys,
I’m currently editing on Premiere but blurring footage on After Effects. When i’m done working on AE, i save the project, go over to premiere, render the clip AND the sequence, save everything, double check if anything has to be rendered and close the programs. When I come back to it, the clip on premiere says “media offline.” I don’t understand why it’s doing this.
Is there any way to preserve these links so that i can come back to the project(s) at a later time? I was told to render in AE, but to my knowledge (which is very limited in AE) that’s sending it to the render queue, saving a clip somewhere, then reimproting it to premiere? that seems a little ridiculous, especially when I have to continue working on these files. I don’t know any other way to “render” in AE.
I also tried relinking the media and it doesn’t find the compositions from the project file.
So basically my question is, how do i preserve these links so that I can keep working on these say after day without having to start over every time? I’m on CS5, upgrading to cs6 soon.
I just started using the Adobe suite maybe a week or so ago, sorry if this is really easy but I have no clue what i’m doing. Thanks guys :]

To avoid re-linking errors some find it easier to just render out the movie from AE and bring it into the edit.
But, can you start with your clip in Pr and then right click and choose “send to AE’ do your blurring, etc. and then save and go back to Pr?
And it should retain the link.
For decades we did not have linking and what we built in AE was rendered out to it’s own video file. FWI.

I’m able to do all of that, and then save both projects along with render, but after I close AE or both programs, the video is gone

Dynamic link will work in PrPro with AE closed. I do this all the time with DL clips. It sounds like your workflow needs a bit of tuning.
From PrPro select “Replace with After Effects Composition” the clip or clips will open in AE. Do your blurs and then switch back to PrPro and you will see your updated clips. YOu can then save the AE project and close the program without loosing your link in PrPro.
Be aware the Dynamic link uses the composition resolution from AE, so if you are working in AE at 1/4 res that is the res you will see in PrPro, so make sure before you export that your AE comp is set to full resolution.

That’s the problem though. After I save and exit AE, it’s not in premiere any more. so, I actually CAN’T close AE and keep working in premiere.

What is your workflow using Dynamiclink, because it works for me using the workflow from the above post.

I’m not sure what happened, but it seems to keep the link if I open After effects last and close it first. Thanks for your help guys!
