  Problems with imported video in CS4

  Hi,
  We’re editing a graduation video , and we’re having lots of problems with the video acting strangely within Premiere Pro CS4. When we open up the video outside of Premiere, it opens up fine and plays fine. But within Premiere Pro, it plays strangely with errors including playing super-fast, in other words with everyone moving in super fast motion, and playing with sound and no video. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing these problems?
  We shot the footage HD and we’re editing on a PC with 16 GB of RAM on a 64-bit Windows 7 operating system.
  Any insights would be much appreciated.

  Hi Neil, we need more information. What type of file does the camera you used produce? What, if any were the options set on the camera for recording?

  Thanks a lot Jon, and let me try to provide that info, or at least some of it. Unfortunately there may be a few gaps I will try to fill! There was an outside video production company my school used to provide all the equipment, several big studio-style cameras that were arranged around the auditorium, and the capture files they provided to us were Quicktimes. I’m not sure about the camera settings. I will try to get that info from my supervisor, who I think will know those answers, as soon as possible. Thanks again for the response and just let me know if you or anyone else has any thoughts in the interim.

  Neil,

  Hi. Not knowing your skill level, something simple I thought about was, are you editing in the correct sequence type and settings for the footage you received. If not, or your not sure, take one of the clips and drag it into the new item button at the bottom of your project window, that will create a new sequence based on the clip you used as reference.

  Also where do you have the footage stored and if you are using an external hard drive what is your connection, i.e USB 2.0, Firewire, etc.?

  I know this is basic stuff but I just wanted to throw it out there in case you haven’t used Premiere much.

  Do you know if the QuickTime files are direct from camera media cards, or was the footage “captured” later as QuickTime? CS4 is pretty old, so if you were handed data straight from newer cameras, it could be that Premiere is just not able to properly recognize what exactly the clips are.

  But in any case, please provide as much info as possible. In the Bin, select a clip and it should then show some specs above, or right-click and check Properties and report the results.
