I’ve shot some video on my Canon C100, and I’m trying to find the best bitrate/export recipe for YouTube. I’m exporting MP4/H.264/1080p.

I’ve read around, and there are a variety of answers, but would like to hear what is working for other for the best possible quality for YouTube. I’ve set my max bitrate at 20M, and average at 15M.

Anyone have settings that work well for them?

What you have sounds about right. If it’s a short clip (i.e. less than 10 minutes) you’ll be fine. If it’s an 1-2 hour presentation then you’ll have to have a pretty fast internet connection to push the finished file up to YouTube. You’re always fighting size vs. quality with internet compression.

I always point people to Vimeo’s compression guide. It’s got a good walkthrough of the different compression settings and generally accepted good starting points for data rate and resolutions.

Use a YouTube preset (under H.264) they work just grand.

Both Ryan and Ann are spot on. Something else to consider as well is using CBR for shorter duration programs and also experimenting with the bit rate settings to optimize your file size and maintain a good balance between encoding time and quality.

Just because you can encode at 20Mbps doesn’t mean that you should or even need to.
