  HD proxies for VERY old Macbook Pro workflow

  Thank you in advance for reading and contributing to this post.

  I’m editing a long format documentary on an iMac on Premiere Pro CS6. OS 10.7.5.
  The footage is in a MPEG-2 1080p format.

  I am going on a trip but need to continue editing on my old Macbook. The specs are pretty bad:
  2.33Gz Dual Core2 Duo.
  3Gb ram (strange i know)
  667 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM
  OS10.6.8

  Is this possible? What suggestions are there (except for buying a new macbook) to make this work. I will only be doing basic edits, logging etc. but long timelines. Quick playback is important, but wont be needing to render, as this would be done again with the high res clips on the iMac. I’m hoping for a back and forth workflow to allow me to update project as I jump from one to the other.

  Will the difference in OS make a difference in the premiere project?
  What would be a good proxy setting, and what is an advisable workflow to implement?

  Is this MPEG-2 material camera original? If so it should be intraframe which is far friendlier to any NLE than something highly compressed with interframes.

  I have a MBP with near the same specs and I’ve edited 5DmkII camera originals (compressed h.264) and it’ll work. I will say if you have the time to convert your footage to ProRes, Cineform, or DNxHD, it’ll be a more comfortable editing experience.

  Thanks for the reply Angelo.

  The MPEG-2 was converted from MTS files using Pavtube MTS converter. There was an Adobe Premiere Pro MPEG present that I used. It works really well on the iMac. I’m not sure if it is intraframe, or quite sure what this is referring to? (I’m still on the newer side of editing, so any informative insights to this is very welcome!)

  Is there a solid workflow I could follow to jump from one machine to the other, while continuing to develop rough cuts and organising footage?

  Is it worth creating proxies at smaller resolution for the MBR or will this confuse the project files?
