CS5 and ProRes 422
Hello.
I need your help!
I’ve edited a video on a Mac on Premiere CS5 and now need a ProRes 422 file for delivery. I can’t find the option even though I have Final Cut Pro installed.
Is exporting an MP4 file and then converting it into ProRess 422 an option, or I’m losing quality?
Additionally, XML does not work.

In your export dialog choose quicktime as the format and custom as the preset, and under video codec choose Prores

I don’t have the custom option! Also, for FCP, it’s the trial version. Should I simply buy it… still, if in Premiere I don’t have custom, what am I supposed to do?

So you have FCPX as a trial version?
That probably won’t get you the goods. The least expensive option is to buy Compressor from the App Store, which I believe still gets you the ProRes codec pack. If you want FCPX though, don’t let me stop you! 😉

But does installing the compressor work for Premiere, because it seems like it is a tool for FCP. Is FCP worth it? I may just buy it, but I have to make sure that CS5 will give me the ProRes 422 export option.

Compressor doesn’t integrate with Premiere (meaning you can’t directly export from Premiere into Compressor). You’re just buying Compressor so you can get your hands on the ProRes codec. FCPX is $300 and Compressor is $50. If you just want the ProRes codec package then Compressor is your cheapest option. If you want a different NLE, then FCPX it is.

It’s been awhile since I have worked in CS5.5 I though the option to choose a custom preset was there but I could be mistaken.

So the question is, If I install Compressor or Final Cut Pro, will Premiere show the Pro Res 422 option, or still not?

Yes, if you install a software package that can write to Prores, that ability now exists in QuickTime and you can export from Premiere Pro…pick QuickTime format, and below in the video tab you’ll see the video codec (i think it usually defaults to DV), just go to that widget and change the target codec.

One more question. If I currently have Final Cut Pro X (Trailer), shouldn’t I be able to see the option as well for the trail period on CS5 (cause I don’t). Not sure if it’s cause I have to buy it. If so, the compressor will do then?

I don’t know how Apple does that…it s possible there is some limitation on the trial version of FCPX… If you can’t see it (it looked like you could set it up to export on your screen grab…), you may want to get compressor so you can get it done.
