  • Problems when importing After Effect files in Premiere Pro CS5.5 project

    Dear all

When processing my Canon 5D3 footage (renamed to mpg files) in Premiere Pro, followed by an h.264, HDTV 1080p 25fps export with standard settings (target bitrate 32Mbit/s, max. bitrate 40Mbit/s) except for a change to square pixel, eveything plays smooth as butter on my wmp, vlc and ps3, the latter via NAS stream.

When I stabilize some of the same clips in AE and re-import those as avi files, I have to go down to much lower bitrates or I get jittery footage on all players. I do not have the dynamic link option, since I got two stand alone programs.

I also tried quicktime png export and got render errors in PP. h.264 export out of AE results in the same effect as when exporting AE avi files to PP, jittery footage except for very low bitrates when rendered out of PP.
What am I doing wrong here? Original Canon footage, AE and PP settings seem to be correct and all the same, 1080p, 25fps, 48kHz etc..
The preview in PP is smooth with the AE avi files, just the render result is jittery.
I did one render out of my project, where it did work with the AE avi files and played nicely on my PS3, I have no clue why. If I watch this particular one, the Mbps info on the PS3 never goes higher than 100Mbps, with all the other renders it goes over 100Mbps and then it starts to get jittery. I have no clue what I have done differently with this particular render.

PP and AE are both up to date.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks
    Juerg

“Edit” Is your footage suffering from Jittery (jaggy) looking video? Like bad compression artifacts or Jittery as in stuttering playback?

Export your stabilized clips for editing in PrPro as animation or some other less lossless codec than AVI, and think about upgrading to CS6.

I am not sure why you are “changing to square pixel” the pixel aspect ratio should already be 1.0 (square) SD analog video has a pixels aspect of 0.9 (non-square) Your footage from the DSLR should already have a 1.0 Pixel aspect ratio.

Thank you for your response, Kris!

The original footage plays very smooth in both PP and AE, but it was shot handheld and therefore a bit shaky.

As for the square pixels, the H.264 HDTV 1080p 25 fps preset shows a Widescreen 16:9 pixel aspect ratio which I change to square pixels, this makes me wondering too, since the original footage and the sequence are all set to square pixels.

I just did an export from AE using Quicktime animation with quality set to 80%. No change, as soon as I export out of PrPro, I get stuttering playback during all those scenes.

What I am wondering, if I set the H.264 export to max. bitrate of 40Mbit/s, why is the PS3 showing bitrates of >100Mbit/s during the playback of those AE clips, where the stuttering occurs?

As for CS6, I want to change, but I think I will wait for CS7. I have not yet made up my mind if I want to join their cloud program.

    Thanks for your answer, Kris!

My Canon 5d3 footage is not jittery at all, just handheld and a little shaky, therefore the stabilizing in AE.
I tried exporting with Quicktime animation (quality set to 80), but the problem after rendering out of PrPro is still there.
I am wondering as well that in the PrPro preset HDTV 1080p 25fps, the pixel aspect ratio default is set to 16:9, as all the original footage and sequence settings use square pixels.

What I do not understand is if I set the max. bitrate in PrPro to 40Mbit/s, why do my vlc and ps3 info show bitrates of >100Mbit/s when the AE clips play? This is what causes the problem and I do not know the remedy. As long as I do not have any sort of AE files in the PrPro timeline, export at max. 40Mbit/s plays perfect with all players.

I am grateful for any hint, thanks!

Sorry for the double post, my first post did not appear for about an hour and I figured it did not get processed, therefore I wrote another one.
