When you use the paint option can you set it as a matte layer?
Hi there
Basically what im wondering is when you paint on a layer, i know you can change whether it is multiply,screen,overlay etc on the layer, but is there not a way for it to be like a matte layer…..to reveaal the image? i know its name probably isnt matte, but something similar. I just want to draw on and have that reveal the image, i know you can do this on a seperate white layer and set it as luma matte but its kind of annoying becuase you cant see the layer beneath that you are drawing on…..cause you have to draw on it as a separate layer in a different window…..if you know what i mean?

No, don’t be sorry. In the future, just continue your first thread by changing the titles. You don’t want to make 2000 threads for only one same effect, no?
To make it quick, Alpha Matte (in the timeline column) should do the thing.

when you say make it alpha matte in the timeline, so it has to be on separate layer then yes? just cause if you paint on the same layer and make it alpha matte youll loose anything underneath the paint. its just easier painting on the same layer cause you can see what you are painting on……..

yes – you’re going to have to paint on a layer above, and then use it to matte (alpha or luma) the layer below.
your problem sounds like you want a way where you can paint on an above layer while being able to see what you’re painting on below. try painting on a layer while having ‘paint on transparent’ checked.
also try using the stroke effect to stroke a path, then using that stroked path as an alpha or luma matte. then you can draw a path on a solid which can be invisible, allowing you to see the layer below. then you can keyframe the stroke start and end controls to ‘draw’ in the stroke.

you can do it with the clone tool :
1/create a new solid
2/double clic on it
3/select the clone tool
4/in the paint panel select your footage in the source menu
5/clic the incrust button and adjust the opacity of you footage (you see it when you mouse is on the solid window)
6/now you can reveal you footage with the clone toolthis paint solid is now the new version of you revealed footage so you can switch of the original
