Automate insertion of a transition clip between other clips?
I am making a compilation of several hundred clips, and between each one, I have another clip that I will use to transition between them.
Basically, I will have all of my regular clips on Track1, back to back.
Then I need to put the transition clips on track 2, and have it ripple insert (is this the correct term?) so that all the remaining clips in track 1 get shifted to the right.I can easily do this manually 1 at a time using my mouse and keyboard. But its incredibly tedious. But is there any way I could achieve this with JUST keyboard shortcuts? In that case, I would be able to script it using AutoHotkey or something.

Yep, quite easy. (in CS6 anyway, I can’t test this in any other versions)
To set this up, you need to do three things.
1 All the clips (other then the repeated transition clip) need to be in a bin in the order that you want them.
2 you need to assign a shortcut to “open in source monitor” in the project panel.
3 Copy the repeated clip to the clipboard.
Start with the project panel selected and the first clip highlighted
Then automate this sequence:
1) [shortcut for open in source monitor] (this opens the clip in the source monitor)
2) , (thats a comma, which does an insert edit)
3) Shift + 3 (selects the timeline panel)
4) Cmd/Ctl + V (pastes the repeated clip)
5) Shift + 1 (selects the project panel again)
6) Down-arrow key (selects the next clip in the list)

Well that’s awesome, I managed to get this working just like I needed.
I did it slightly different than your steps (I already had the main clips laid out on the timeline in a certain order), and I got it to insert on a different track, just how I wanted.Now, for part 2.
Let’s say my transition clip is 20 frames long in total. 10 frames in the middle are supposed to go between each clip, while 5 frames on each side overlap the clips below it.
So I begin by trimming the clip down to the 10 frames that need to go in the middle, this way the insert edits put the correct amount of space.
But now, is there any way to go back and drag the handles out on each one, to get those extra 5 frames on each side? -
Try this:
You have all the main clips on Video 1 and all the transitions on video 2 correct?
Make sure only video 2 is selected then
Enter Trim mode by hitting T
And then use
Option/Alt + Shift + Right or Option/Alt + Shift + left will adjust each edit 5 frames left or right.

he down arrow will take you to the next edit.If you want a number other then 5 you can change the “large trim offset” in the trim preferences.
